December 2021 Side Hustle Report – $3,467.94

Updated: Jul 12, 2022

Happy New Year everyone! It’s hard to believe that 2021 has come and gone, but here we are. It was a tough year for most of us, but I’m hoping that 2022 starts to look a little better.

In the meantime, before we get into the new year, we need to first take a look at what I made from the gig economy in the final month of 2021.

As a brief recap if you’re new here, each month, I document what I made from side hustling using various gig economy and sharing economy apps. I have mountains of data here. I’ve been tracking this income since 2019, so I have over 3 years of side hustle reports detailing all of the different ways I’ve earned extra money using these different apps.

In the remainder of this post, we’ll take a look at what I made for December 2021.

Side Hustle Income for December 2021

  • Wag: $16.59

  • Sharegrid (Camera Rental): $0

  • Sportsbetting Arbitrage: $556.62

  • Crypto Interest: $295.80

  • House Hack: $411.79

  • Airbnb/Rental Income: $2,187.14

Total Side Hustle Income for December 2021 = $3,467.94

I’m very happy with my December earnings. Luckily, because I use so many different gig economy apps, I was still able to make over $1,000 for the month. Most of this was due to Airbnb and the increased demand I typically see during the holiday season. But other apps also came through. You can see what it’s so important to have different sources of income if you’re trying to earn money with gig economy apps. A lot of these little apps might not seem like much by themselves, but when you combine them, they can become a significant source of income.

Below is a more in-depth look at my earnings with each gig economy app.

Wag Income: $16.59

My girlfriend and I wanted to go on a walk, so I decided to spice it up and bring a dog with (also doesn't hurt to get paid to do so). I ended up picking up a puppy close to my apartment and we ended up walking the dog for 45 minutes. With the tip, we earned $16.59. Not bad considering, we were going to go for a walk anyways, so why not get paid for it.

Sharegrid (Camera Rental): $0

I have my GoPro 7 hero, GoPro Fusion, and DJI Mavic 2 drone for rent on Sharegrid website. Sharegrid is a website where people local can rent camera equipment. I unfortunately didn't have any request for this month.

Sportsbetting Arbitrage: $556.62

I really ramped up my sports arbitrage bets in December. I was placing $500-$2,000 per leg bets. Since there's two legs in a bet for the arbitrage, I was betting $1,000 to $4000 in total.

There were also a lot of free promotions through the sportsbook apps to receive free bets. In totally for December I received free bets for $10, $30, $30, $50, $51, and $75. With OddsJam I can typically receive 70-85% of the free bet with placing a spreed bet every. So for example, if I receive a free $10 bet I will win $7 to $8.50 risk free.

December ended up being a great month for me with sports arbitrage bettings and free bets.

Crypto Interest: $295.80

I use Voyager and BlockFi to earn crypto interest each month. I use Voyager for BTC, USDC, and ADA and BlockFi for ETH and USDC. I deposited $2,400 into Voyager to earn even more interest, since the money was sitting in a high yield savings account earning less than half a percent APY.

In total for December, I earned $67.16 from BlockFi. The break down is as follow; $56.68 in USDC and .00284642 in ETH (about $10.48 USD when ETH was at $3,682 at the end of November).

With Voyager I earned a total of $228.64 for the month of December. The break down is as follow; $158.74 in USDC, .001209 in BTC (about $55.88 USD when BTC was at $46,224 at the end of December), and 10.7 ADA (about $14.02 USD when ADA was at $1.31 at the end of December).

House Hack Income: $411.79

If you’re a regular reader, you know that I bought a three-flat in Chicago in June 2019. I lived in the building while doing the renovations and moved out in June of this year. I rent the bottom garden unit for $1,000, plus $100 for the two car garage. The top unit rents for $2,325 per month. So in total I'm collecting $3,425 per month in rents. While I still have the middle apartment open for Airbnb, which is discussed below.

My monthly mortgage payment with insurance and property taxes was $3,013.21. There were no repairs in December, which meant I earned a total of $411.79 for the month of December.

Airbnb/Rental Income Income: $2,187.14

In September, four college guests moved into my Airbnb for a three-month internship near the apartment. So far everything has been running very smoothly. Their booking lasted until mid December and then a family booked it for the last week in December.

In total, I was booked for all 26 days in December and collected $2,347.14, which is solid, but I tried to make at least $2,800 per a month for Airbnb.

There was only one cleaning for the month of December, which costed $160 total.

And that concludes the December 2021 Side Hustle Report.

December was a good side hustle month and I think a good example of why it’s important to have different sources of gig economy income. If I didn’t have Airbnb, my earnings would have been much less. But because I have so many gig economy apps, I was able to make a solid income. I’m very happy about that. When combined with what I made on this blog, 2021 is looking to be a solid income year for me personally. I’m not making big finance money or anything, but I’m making enough to feel comfortable. And between the choice of making more but working those crazy finance hours, I’ll always opt to do this, where I can decide what my day looks like and write and do gig economy stuff during the day.
